Our Story

In frustration over the unlawful littering of furniture throughout university apartments, Sam Asanad,
Kian Asanad, and Amir Hakimi founded the organization “Furnish the Homeless” in September 2012 to
clean up the streets of Westwood, California while simultaneously providing furniture free of cost to
previously homeless individuals in transitional housing programs.
Since 2012, Furnish the Homeless operates as a student-run organization at the University of California,
Los Angeles. In its first year, UCLA’s Furnish the Homeless fully furnished twelve residences, donated
over thirty items of furniture to the Los Angeles Mission, and became a distinguished organization on
campus and throughout the Los Angeles community. As of September 2017, Furnish the Homeless has
helped furnished 104 clients, and collected 614 furniture items. Furnish the Homeless operates through
quarterly drives in the following months: December, March, and June. Besides our quarterly drives that
help facilitate previously homeless individual’s transition into permanent housing, we also aim to
educate the entire student body on homelessness and how to break the cycle of poverty.
